Elizabeth Vargas Biography
Elizabeth Vargas is an Emmy Award-winning American broadcast journalist whose career spans local newsrooms and national anchor desks. After earning a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, Vargas began her professional journey at a CBS affiliate before joining NBC News, where she contributed to programs such as "Dateline" and "Today." She later joined ABC Network, working on news shows including "Good Morning America," "20/20," and "World News Tonight," and also served as a host for ABC News specials.
Vargas hosted the newsmagazine show "20/20" on ABC for 15 years and was co-anchor of "World News Tonight." She was the first national evening news anchor of Puerto Rican and Irish-American heritage and the third female anchor of a network evening newscast in the United States. Drawing on her investigative journalism background, Vargas reported on high-profile stories at ABC News, including the Laci Peterson, Matthew Shepard, and Amanda Knox cases, the experiences of Christian refugees fleeing ISIS in Iraq, Cambodian orphans adopted without parental consent, and the immigration case of Elián González, for which she received an Emmy Award. Vargas also anchored ABC News coverage of major breaking stories, including the deaths of President Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy Jr., and Hurricane Katrina's impact on the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Vargas became known as the host of "America's Most Wanted" on FOX and as the lead investigative reporter and documentary anchor for A&E Networks. She anchors "Elizabeth Vargas Reports," a weekday news program on NewsNation, and hosts "iCrime," a syndicated crime series broadcast on WPIX-TV in New York and other stations nationwide.
Vargas authored the memoir "Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction," which appeared on the New York Times bestseller list and received the Books for a Better Life Award in the First Book category. The memoir explores her experiences with anxiety and alcohol use disorder, as well as her journey toward recovery. Vargas serves on the board of directors for the nonprofit Partnership to End Addiction and hosts "Heart of the Matter," a podcast focused on addiction, recovery, and stigma. Her work in broadcast journalism and advocacy has contributed to ongoing conversations about mental health and addiction.
