Dr. Richard M. Ryan is a clinical psychologist recognized as the co-developer of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) with Edward L. Deci. SDT is a widely applied theory of human motivation that has influenced research and interventions in work organizations, education, clinical psychology, virtual environments, and sports. Ryan's work with Deci challenged the prevailing view that external rewards are the primary drivers of human behavior, emphasizing instead the importance of intrinsic motivation and psychological needs.
Ryan serves as a professor at the Institute for Positive Psychology & Education at Australian Catholic University, North Sydney. He is also a Distinguished Professor in the College of Education at Ewha Womans University, Professor Emeritus in Psychology at the University of Rochester, and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London. Ryan has held visiting professorships at the National Institute of Education in Singapore, University of Bath in England, and Max Planck Institute in Berlin, Germany. He has lectured at more than 100 universities worldwide and consulted with organizations, schools, clinics, and health-care initiatives.
Ryan has authored over 450 scientific papers and books on human motivation, personality, and psychological well-being. His works include "Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Human Behavior," co-authored with Deci, "Self-Determination Theory: Basic Psychological Needs in Motivation, Development, and Wellness," and "Glued to Games," which examines the motivational aspects of video games. He also edited "The Oxford Handbook of Motivation."
Ryan has been listed among the Top 20 most influential industrial-organizational psychologists and has received multiple lifetime achievement awards for his contributions to motivation, personal meaning, and self and identity. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the American Educational Research Association, and the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. Ryan holds an honorary doctorate from the University of Thessaly.
In addition to his academic roles, Ryan is a co-founder of motivationWorks, an organizational research and consulting firm serving Fortune 100 companies. He lectures internationally on motivation, psychological well-being, and behavioral functioning, with applications in workplace psychology, education, health, sport and exercise, and digital environments. His research interests include the neurological mechanisms underlying motivation and the broader political and economic influences on motivational processes.
