Zain Asher Biography
Zain Asher is a British-Nigerian journalist and anchor for CNN International, based in New York City. Asher attended Oxford University, earning a degree in French and Spanish, and later graduated from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University. She began her career as a freelance reporter at News 12 Networks and Money Magazine before joining CNN as a business correspondent.
Asher anchors "One World with Zain Asher and Bianna Golodryga" on CNN International, a program focused on global news coverage and international affairs, with an emphasis on providing diverse perspectives from every continent, including Africa. She also hosts "Marketplace Africa," CNN International's weekly business show examining Africa's role in global markets, where she regularly interviews CEOs and world leaders. Throughout her career, Asher has anchored coverage of major breaking news and business stories, including the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the war in Ukraine, the Covid-19 pandemic, the US-China trade war, the Beirut explosion, anti-police violence protests in Nigeria, racial and economic inequality in the United States, and the deaths of Fidel Castro and Muhammad Ali.
Asher anchored a three-day special for CNN's Freedom Project, highlighting the experiences of human trafficking victims and international efforts to combat modern-day slavery. She has reported from the field on high-profile stories such as the kidnapping of schoolgirls by Boko Haram militants in Nigeria and the terrorist attack at the Boston Marathon. Her work spans business reporting, global affairs, and humanitarian issues, contributing to her recognition as a leading journalist in international news.
Asher is the author of "Where the Children Take Us: How One Family Achieved the Unimaginable," a memoir recounting her mother's efforts to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. The book draws inspiration from her TEDx Talk, "Trust Your Struggle," which has garnered millions of views on YouTube. Her family includes her brother, Chiwetel Ejiofor, known for his role in "12 Years a Slave."
Asher has been named an honorary fellow of Keble College, Oxford University. She serves as an advisory council member for Action Against Hunger and has delivered keynote addresses on humanitarian issues. Asher has also partnered with the GEANCO Foundation to support education initiatives in Africa.
