Susan Armstrong Biography

Harnessing the Power of Belief to Accelerate Performance, Susan Armstrong is a Leading Authority in Practical Emotional Intelligence. Regularly featured in the media, having transcended her own life of homelessness, Susan has established a reputation with many of the World’s best-known companies and brands for “lighting a fire” of confidence, purpose and high achievement amongst their leaders and employees.

Today, Armstrong works with household names such as GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, and Bloomberg to teach leaders at all levels how to harness the power of belief to become more authentic, and develop the skills to engage, motivate and inspire exceptional performance in their most important asset – their people.

For Susan Armstrong, life hasn’t always been this way. After 20 years of living on the streets and escaping the clutches of a notorious American motorcycle gang, Susan Armstrong found herself in a fight for her future. Learning and applying the principles of Emotional Intelligence, Armstrong was able to re-wire her belief system and embark on an unparalleled journey of success, rising from a bar maid to Director of Data Services for a large multi-national bank in 4 short years. And she didn’t stop there. She founded Susan Armstrong Training & Development, a company dedicated to helping others learn to harness the power of their beliefs to create success in their own personal and professional lives.

When Armstrong started her company in 1996, she was driven by the realization that she wasn’t alone in holding a flawed belief system; she witnessed first-hand the damage those flawed beliefs were doing within organizations. She has gone on to provide speaking and training services to global organizations, and many governments speaking in over 50 countries on 6 continents over the last 25 years.

Truly a global expert, Armstrong believes that transforming an organization is less about the processes, organizational structure, or product and service offerings and more about the people. You can change your company structure, but if you’re not teaching your Leaders to be Transformational Leaders, if you are not teaching your people to harness the power of belief and develop the skills they need to work with and through the constant change and volitivity that permeates our world today, then you are destined to struggle. Armstrong shares with us the secret weapon for any organization’s success – emotional intelligence, and she does it in her own down-to-earth, storytelling, entertaining and inspiring way.

Armstrong holds credentials in Adult Education and Instructional Design from St. Francis Xavier University, Performance Management and Business Communication from Centennial College, she is the author of two books “An Invisible Prison; A True Story of Survival”, and “Confidence for Life; 9 Secrets for Setting Yourself Free”. Her programs have won an ATD Gold Award for Excellence in Training (Vendor Category), and one of her Leadership Programs has been named as one of the “Top Five Leadership Programs in the World” by HR.com. She has been featured on Discovery Channels “Health on the Line” as well as the documentary “Being Human”. The Canadian Association for Mental Health named Armstrong as an Extraordinary Person and she has been featured in and written for many newspaper, magazine, and television shows over the years.

How to Harness the Power of Belief to Achieve Accountability During Times of Change

70% of Change Initiatives fail in organizations, largely due to employee resistance and lack of management support. That is shocking, and costly. When people are truly invested in change it is 30% more likely to stick, and with excellent Change Management processes the ability to meet or exceed change expectations rises to 94%. How do we, as leaders prevent the inevitable change from failing? Typical change management is about three things: what needs to change, how it needs to change, and the people involved in the change - only one of those is difficult. And only one of those has the power to stop change in its tracks. This session focuses on how we can use communication skills to understand and harness beliefs that get both managers and employees alike onboard with the change. Even good people have bad feelings when it comes to change. It's all about how we support them through it. After this session leaders will:

  • Experience how different people respond to change
  • Describe 5 different types of change and the impact of each on individuals within the organization
  • Apply techniques for utilizing the power of belief to move people through change successfully

The Silent Killer in Organizations Today – Reversing a Manager Centric Culture

Is your organization 'Customer-Centric' or 'Manager-Centric'? Most would like to say, ‘Customer Centric’. But is that true? Challenges with productivity, innovation, getting on board with change – any of these would indicate you may have a ‘Manager Centric’ culture. This is silent condition that is killing organizations. It is not lack of customers, or problems with products or services, it is the undetected condition of employees at all levels making their direct manager happy instead of doing what is right for the business and the customer. And it happens without anyone realizing it. This session is designed for leaders at all levels to begin to understand how a manager-centric culture forms and how you, as leaders, can shift to a customer-centric culture and become more profitable as an organization.

As a result of this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand how a manager centric culture happens
  • Determine the costs of being manager centric not customer centric
  • Identify 3 strategies for moving from manager centric to customer centric
  • Improve innovation, change adoption, engagement, and motivation by implementing three important techniques

Harnessing the Power of Belief to Improve Motivation, Productivity, and Your Bottom Line

The Gallup Organization reminds us every couple of years that nearly 70% of our employees are disengaged. But we don’t hire them that way, so you must wonder what happens? We happen. Leaders have the ability to motivate or demotivate with every word, action, and belief. The question becomes are you motivating or demotivating your employees? We often demotivate those around us without even being aware we are doing it. In this session you will learn:

  • What happens to motivation on the job over time?
  • How we, as leaders de-motivate our employees without being away that we are doing it
  • The 3 key skills you need to enhance engagement, motivation, and performance to achieve your bottom-line results

Stop Standing in Your Own Way; Changing your Internal Algorithms to Create External Success

We all have our own personal algorithms, a code that runs in our subconscious directing our thoughts, actions, decisions – everything we think and do. And it’s often this code that stands in the way of our happiness and success. As a result of these codes, we have our own views and beliefs about ourselves, and our perceived potential. We project those beliefs out onto the world and live into them as if they are true. The problem is that our beliefs may not be accurate, they may be outdated, or just plain wrong.

For Susan Armstrong, those beliefs led to 20 years of addiction, abuse and living on the streets. But she learned to change her beliefs and it completely changed her life. And you can to!

Change your beliefs and change your life. During this session you will:

  • Uncover how you sabotage your own success, peace, and happiness
  • Begin to uncover your personal algorithms and how they guide your choices in life
  • Learn techniques to change how you view yourself, the world, and what your potential is this world
  • Discover the power of creating self-fulfilling prophecies instead of negative ones
