John Mabry Biography
John Mabry, M.S., is a keynote speaker, addiction counselor, mental health advocate, amputee triathlete, and former Hollywood actor whose life story has reached audiences worldwide. After earning a Master of Science in Counseling, Mabry became an inventor, philanthropist, award-winning speaker, and actor and stuntman with more than a decade in the Screen Actors Guild. His acting career began after being discovered by Emmy Award-winning writer and producer Steven Bochco, known for "NYPD Blue" and "L.A. Law." Mabry appeared in American TV series such as "NCIS," "ER," and "Cold Case," as well as films including "Superbad" and "Sublime." He has portrayed amputee characters, worked as an amputee body and stunt double, and served as a technical advisor for productions involving amputee roles.
Mabry's advocacy work is rooted in personal experience. He lost a friend and his leg in a fatal car accident, which led to a prolonged struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorder. His challenges intensified after the accidental overdose death of his brother. Mabry faced job loss, including a position with personal-finance broadcaster Dave Ramsey, due to his addictions. He underwent more than 25 surgeries and multiple rehabilitation stays before achieving lasting recovery.
Mabry has used these experiences to inform his work in addiction recovery and mental health awareness. He became Director of Public Outreach and host of the "High Sobriety" podcast for Addiction Campuses, interviewing recovery advocates from various backgrounds to address the opioid epidemic and reduce the stigma of addiction. Mabry has shared his story with millions, focusing on substance use disorder, mental health, and recovery.
As a below-knee amputee triathlete, Mabry incorporates his athletic achievements into his counseling and public speaking, emphasizing resilience and recovery. His involvement in Toastmasters helped him overcome a fear of public speaking, further supporting his work as a motivational speaker and coach. Mabry educates businesses and colleges on mental health, addiction, and recovery, drawing on more than two decades of experience. His message centers on the importance of connection, courage, and community in overcoming addiction and mental health challenges.
