Blake Leeper Biography
Patrick "Blake" Leeper was born in Kingsport, Tennessee, and has worn prosthetics since he was nine months old due to being born with both legs missing below the knee. Throughout his childhood, Leeper engaged in various sports, including baseball and basketball, under his father's coaching. He attributes his positive outlook to the support and influence of his family.
Leeper began his racing career in 2010 and quickly progressed to training at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. He made his international debut in 2009 in Rio de Janeiro and in 2011, he secured a silver medal at the Parapan American Games in the 100-meter dash. At the 2012 Paralympic Games in London, he earned a bronze in the 200-meter dash and a silver in the 400-meter dash. Continuing his ascent, Leeper set a world record in June 2018 in the 400 meters with a time of 44.42 seconds, the fastest time ever recorded by an amputee. He also broke another world record in the 400m with a time of 44.38 seconds at the 2019 USATF National Championships, becoming the first amputee to qualify for the national team and world championships.
At the 2013 Paralympic World Championships in Lyon, France, Leeper won four medals and was part of the world record-setting 4x100-meter relay team. His medal tally includes one gold, six silver, and one bronze. He holds the Paralympic world record in the 4x100m relay and American records in the 100-meter, 200-meter, and 400-meter dashes.
Outside of his athletic achievements, Leeper is also a motivational speaker, sharing his journey and the belief that anything is possible. He authored "Leap of Faith: My Journey to Become the Fastest American on Two Blades," detailing his experiences and challenges.
