Robert Hammond Biography
Robert Hammond is an urbanist and civic entrepreneur recognized as the co-founder of Friends of the High Line, the nonprofit organization responsible for transforming an abandoned elevated freight railway in Manhattan into the High Line, a prominent public park. Hammond, who had no prior experience in park development, became involved after learning about the planned demolition of the railway in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood. Attending a community meeting, he met Joshua David, and together they initiated a grassroots campaign to repurpose the historic railway on Manhattan's West Side into a public space.
As co-founder and executive director of Friends of the High Line, Hammond guided the project from a community effort to an internationally recognized example of urban renewal and adaptive reuse. The High Line has become a widely visited public space in the United States, drawing millions of annual visitors with its innovative landscape architecture, public art installations, and community programming. The project has contributed significantly to economic and cultural development, serving as a model for infrastructure renewal and urban design. Hammond also established the High Line Network, which connects leaders of infrastructure reuse projects and has influenced the creation of similar initiatives across North America.
Hammond's work has been acknowledged in the fields of architecture, civic design, and urban innovation. He has received the Vincent Scully Prize, the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, and the Rockefeller Foundation's Jane Jacobs Medal, along with Joshua David. He holds an honorary doctorate from The New School. In addition to his urban planning efforts, Hammond is co-producer of the documentary film "Citizen Jane: Battle for the City," which examines the legacy of community design advocate Jane Jacobs. He also received the Rome Prize for "Chance Encounter on the Tiber," a public space project in Rome.
Hammond is a public speaker whose TED Talk, "Building a Park in the Sky," has reached a wide audience. As a contributor to The New York Times, his work explores the role of collective wellbeing and the importance of reclaiming urban spaces. Hammond serves as president and chief strategy officer for Therme Group US, leading initiatives to introduce large-scale urban bathing facilities in the United States. He founded Culture of Bathing, a platform that examines the social, cultural, and spiritual aspects of bathing and the movement toward shared spaces for restoration and community connection.
