Not only is our world not flat, according to leading economist Pankaj Ghemawat, it’s not nearly as interconnected as most believe. Already renowned for his expertise in the general strategy field, he made his name in global strategy arguing against the popular presumption that globalization has already happened, leveraging extensive research and abundant data to back his theory that national borders still matter – a lot.
In addition to his well-known stance on globalization, Ghemawat is increasingly recognized for his insightful presentations on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and creativity, and their implications for business innovation. Serving as director of the Center for the Globalization of Education and Management at the Stern School of Business at New York University, and as a professor of global management at the same institution and professor of global strategy at IESE Business School in Barcelona, his expertise covers a broad spectrum of pertinent business strategy topics. He delves deeply into the dynamics of competitive strategy, business innovation, and globalization, along with their public policy implications.
His seminal works include his 2007 book, "Redefining Global Strategy" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2007), which challenges the one-size-fits-all approach to globalization, and "World 3.0" (Harvard Business Review Press, 2011), which argues against overstated views of global integration and highlights the missed business opportunities due to such perceptions. "World 3.0" not only received accolades from prominent corporate leaders but also garnered the Thinkers50 Book Award for best business book, the Axiom Business Book Gold Award in the International Business/Globalization category, and the IESE Alumni Research Excellence Award. His earlier books include "Commitment" (Free Press, 1991), "Games Businesses Play" (The MIT Press, 1997), and "Strategy and the Business Landscape" (Prentice Hall, 1999). Ghemawat’s extensive bibliography also encompasses over 100 research articles and a plethora of best-selling teaching cases.
Having previously served on Harvard Business School’s faculty and becoming the youngest person in the school’s history to be appointed a full professor in 1991, Ghemawat's prestigious career also includes a tenure as a consultant for McKinsey. He holds a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics and a doctorate in business economics from Harvard. His role extends beyond academia into influential think tanks; he is Chairman-Designate of the Strategy Research Foundation, a fellow of the Academy of International Business and the Strategy Management Society, and a former member of the globalization taskforce for the AACSB, where he authored vital recommendations on globalization education. In 2011, he developed the DHL Global Connectedness Index, providing a thorough, country-by-country analysis of global interconnections.
