Nicholas Kardaras Biography
Dr. Nicholas Kardaras is a psychologist, author, and recognized expert on addiction and the clinical impact of the digital age. With more than 20 years of clinical and operational experience, Kardaras has developed and managed treatment programs that address substance use disorders and technology addiction. He served as a clinical professor at Stony Brook Medicine, specializing in the neurophysiology and treatment of addiction, and has taught neuropsychology at the doctoral level. Kardaras has collaborated on clinical protocols with Dr. Howard Shaffer, associate professor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Division of Addiction. His background also includes experience as an AAU National Karate champion, former New York City nightclub owner, and coma survivor.
Kardaras is the author of "Glow Kids," a book examining the clinical, neurological, and sociological aspects of technology addiction, including the effects of smartphones, video games, and social media. "Glow Kids" has been translated into multiple languages and serves as a resource for parents, educators, and clinicians seeking research-based information on tech addiction. His earlier book, "How Plato and Pythagoras Can Save Your Life," explores the use of philosophy in supporting young people facing existential challenges.
In "Digital Madness," Kardaras analyzes the mental health impact of technology addiction and social media on teens and young adults. The book discusses how social media immersion can contribute to emotional extremes, addictive behaviors, and the spread of psychiatric disorders, while also offering philosophical approaches to resilience and critical thinking. Kardaras's New York Post op-ed, Digital Heroin, has reached a wide audience and contributed to public discourse on screen culture and mental health.
Kardaras has worked clinically with more than 2,000 teens and young adults and advocates for the recognition of screen addiction as a clinical disorder. He has collaborated with legislators to support mental health protections for children and young adults and serves as an expert witness and consultant in legal cases involving gaming and social media companies. Kardaras is the founder and chief clinical officer of Maui Recovery in Hawaii, Omega Recovery in Austin, and the Launch House in New York.
