Joshua Johnson Biography
Joshua Johnson is a journalist and broadcaster whose career spans public radio, cable news, and independent media. Johnson developed an early interest in journalism, drawing inspiration from African American journalists including Ed Bradley, Bernard Shaw, and Dwight Lauderdale. He graduated from the University of Miami and began his career in public radio, working on a collaborative project between WLRN and Miami Herald.
Johnson later moved to San Francisco to join KQED, an NPR affiliate, where he served as morning newscaster. He also worked as a substitute host for KQED's "Forum" and taught podcasting courses at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism.
Johnson became the founding host of "1A," a public radio show distributed by NPR and produced by WAMU in Washington, D.C. The program, inspired by the First Amendment, addresses issues related to free speech and public affairs and succeeded "The Diane Rehm Show." Johnson is recognized for his balanced approach to political analysis and public affairs journalism.
He later joined NBC News as host of the primetime newsmagazine "NOW Tonight" and previously anchored "The Week with Joshua Johnson" on MSNBC. During his tenure at NBC, Johnson produced specials focused on LGBTQ people of color and the teaching of Black History.
Following his work at NBC News, Johnson created and anchored "The Night Light with Joshua Johnson," an independent multiplatform series exploring democracy, civic engagement, and community connection. He has also appeared on Onion News Network as anchor Dwight Richmond, contributing to the network's recognition with a Webby Award for Comedy.
With more than two decades of experience, Johnson has worked as a broadcaster, facilitator, news anchor, talk show host, and public speaker, focusing on public affairs, democracy, and media diversity. He is a graduate of the University of Miami School of Communication and has been recognized by the school as Communicator of the Year. Johnson is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association.
