Ian Burrell Biography
Ian Burrell is recognized as the world's only Global Rum Ambassador, a title he created after serving as the United Kingdom's first rum brand ambassador. A British-Jamaican bartender, consultant, rum expert, and writer, Burrell transitioned from a career as a professional basketball player in the United Kingdom to becoming an international recording artist. He continues to receive royalties from a song featured on the soundtrack of "Space Jam." His enduring interest in cane spirits led him to pursue a full-time career in the rum industry.
Burrell was appointed the first rum ambassador in the United Kingdom by Wray & Nephew, which prompted him to expand his expertise across various rum styles and share that knowledge within the spirits industry. He is known for extensive travel and for redefining the role of an international spirits ambassador. Burrell founded the UK RumFest, the world's first international rum festival, which inspired similar events in cities such as Miami, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Prague, Hong Kong, and Mauritius. He set a Guinness World Record for the largest organized rum tasting and masterclass. Unlike most brand ambassadors, Burrell has promoted rum on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
Burrell's influence in the drinks industry extends to awards and recognition. He is a seven-time final four nominee for the Spirited Awards and received the International Brand Ambassador of the Year Award at Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans. He has been named among the most influential people in the global drinks industry by Drinks International and received the Class Bar Magazine award for outstanding contribution to the drinks industry, as well as the International Wine & Spirits Competition Spirits Communicator Trophy. Burrell has also been listed among the top 50 influencers in the global bar industry for five consecutive years in Drinks International's Bar World Top 100.
Burrell co-founded Equiano Rum, a premium blend of African and Caribbean rums, marking the first collaboration of its kind in the category. Equiano Rum honors the legacy of abolitionist and author Olaudah Equiano and donates a portion of its profits to freedom and equality projects through the Equiano Foundation. Burrell is also the author of "Rum: A Tasting Course," which explores the history, production, and styles of rum.
