Erik Segelbaum Biography
Erik Segelbaum is a wine professional with more than three decades of experience in hospitality, serving as a sommelier, educator, journalist, and entrepreneur. Segelbaum began his career as a fine dining chef, developing his palate and interest in wine through collaboration with sommeliers on pairing menus. He holds a Bachelor of Science in culinary arts and business, with minors in hospitality management and nutrition food science from Drexel University.
Segelbaum's first wine directorship was at Vix at Hotel Victor in South Beach, followed by positions at Schwartz Brothers, Royal Caribbean cruise ships, and Starr Restaurants. He also served as head sommelier of MV The World, a 665-foot yacht with 135 privately owned residences. Throughout his career, Segelbaum has opened more than 30 restaurants and hotels, spanning Michelin Star fine dining, fast casual, and multi-unit concepts.
Segelbaum was named "Sommelier of the Year" by Food & Wine Magazine and recognized as a "40 Under 40 Global Tastemaker" by Wine Enthusiast. He received the Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Award for Social Visionary of the Year. He holds the Advanced Sommelier designation from the Court of Master Sommeliers, a credential held by fewer than 600 specialists worldwide. Additional certifications include Certified Specialist of Wine with distinction from the Society of Wine Educators and Wine and Spirits Locations Specialist with distinction.
Segelbaum founded SOMLYAY, a company providing training and consultancy for hospitality staff and private client services for consumers. He is also the founder of GoodSomm, a luxury lifestyle wine club, and co-owner of SWIG Partners, an import and distribution facilitation agency. Segelbaum serves as the Smithsonian's national wine educator, hosting monthly consumer classes. He is an editor and journalist for publications including Food & Wine Magazine, Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Somm Journal, and Tasting Panel. Segelbaum is vice president of the United Sommeliers Foundation, a charity supporting wine professionals in need.
