David Chang Biography
David Chang is a chef, restaurateur, author, and media personality known for his influence on the culinary industry and the popularization of modern Asian cuisine. As the founder of the Momofuku restaurant group, Chang has contributed to the evolution of contemporary Asian-American dining. He studied religious studies at Trinity College and worked in finance before attending the French Culinary Institute. After gaining experience at Tom Colicchio's restaurant Craft, Chang moved to Japan to study ramen, supporting himself by teaching English and working in izakaya and ramen establishments. He later returned to New York, worked at Daniel Boulud's Café Boulud, and eventually opened Momofuku Noodle Bar, the first in what would become a series of restaurants under the Momofuku brand.
Momofuku has been recognized by The New York Times for its role in the rise of contemporary Asian-American cuisine and was named the most important restaurant in America by Bon Appétit. The group has expanded to include multiple restaurants and a line of restaurant-grade products for home cooks. Momofuku Ko holds two Michelin stars and is featured on the S.Pellegrino World's Best Restaurants list. Chang has received honors such as Food & Wine Best New Chef, Bon Appétit Chef of the Year, and five James Beard Awards, including Outstanding Chef and Best Chef New York City. He has also been named a Time 100 honoree, GQ's Man of the Year, and has appeared on Fortune's 40 Under 40 and Esquire's list of influential people.
In addition to his work in restaurants, Chang has expanded his presence through writing, television, and digital media. His Netflix series "Ugly Delicious" and podcast "The Dave Chang Show" explore topics related to food, culture, and identity. He hosted "Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner" on Netflix, featuring food destinations with celebrity guests. Chang became the first celebrity on ABC's "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?" to win a million dollars, donating the prize to Southern Smoke, a charity supporting food and drink industry workers. In 2026, he debuted his new travel and food philosophy show "The Detour with David Chang."
Chang is the author of the New York Times best-selling cookbook "Momofuku" and the memoir "Eat a Peach," which provides insight into his career, the restaurant industry, and his experiences with mental health. He also co-founded the food magazine Lucky Peach, which published 25 quarterly volumes.
