Erika Cheung Biography
Erika Cheung is an ethics advocate, entrepreneur, and former laboratory scientist recognized for her role as a whistleblower in the Theranos fraud case. Cheung graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a dual degree in molecular and cell biology and linguistics. She joined Theranos as an entry-level laboratory associate, where she worked on validating test results produced by the company's proprietary blood-testing devices. During her tenure, Cheung observed repeated quality-control failures in the devices and noted that staff were encouraged to delete outlier results before reporting them.
Cheung reported fraudulent laboratory practices to federal regulators, contributing to the exposure of Theranos and the felony conviction of its CEO for defrauding investors. She later testified for the prosecution in the federal criminal fraud trial of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, detailing frequent data manipulation and the deletion of data points to achieve desired results. Holmes acknowledged on the witness stand that Cheung's concerns were accurate.
Cheung's involvement in the Theranos case has been documented in John Carreyrou's book "Bad Blood," the podcast "The Dropout," the HBO documentary "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley," and Hulu's "The Dropout." She has spoken publicly about her experience and business ethics, including in a TED talk titled "Theranos, Whistleblowing and Speaking Truth to Power," where she outlines a framework for addressing ethical challenges in organizations.
After the Theranos case, Cheung focused on building ethical innovation ecosystems. She moved to Hong Kong and joined Betatron Venture Group, a technology accelerator, progressing from entrepreneur in residence to program director, where she supported early-stage technology startups in Asia and helped strengthen governance structures. Cheung has also served as an advisor for venture capital firms supporting biotech and healthcare companies in emerging markets. She is the executive director of Ethics in Entrepreneurship, a nonprofit organization dedicated to embedding ethical questioning, culture, and systems in startup ecosystems.
