Daniel Lamarre is a Canadian business executive recognized for his leadership in the global entertainment industry. Lamarre began his career as a journalist before moving into communications and public relations, holding leadership roles at Burson-Marsteller and National Public Relations. He later served as president and CEO of TVA, Quebec's largest private television broadcaster. When Lamarre joined Cirque du Soleil as president of new ventures, the company had 2,000 employees and seven shows in performance. Five years later, he became chief executive, overseeing the company's growth to 5,000 employees and 44 shows worldwide.
During his tenure as president and CEO, Lamarre guided Cirque du Soleil's transformation into a major force in live entertainment. At its peak, Cirque du Soleil achieved annual sales of $1 billion, profit margins of 20 percent (EBITDA), and drew 15 million attendees per year—surpassing the combined audience of all 39 Broadway shows. Lamarre led complex negotiations resulting in agreements with The Beatles and Michael Jackson's estate. Cirque du Soleil's production of "Love," based on The Beatles' music, remains the only live show ever authorized by the group. The production "One" celebrated Michael Jackson's legacy following negotiations with his estate.
Lamarre's leadership was tested during the COVID-19 pandemic, which brought Cirque du Soleil's operations to a halt. His book, "Balancing Acts," chronicles the impact of the pandemic on the entertainment sector and details how Cirque du Soleil navigated the crisis and returned to financial stability. As president and CEO, Lamarre directed business development and operations strategy, ensuring the organization's sustainability and the preservation of its culture. He later transitioned to executive vice-chairman of the board, focusing on strengthening partnerships and driving new growth initiatives for Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group.
In addition to his operational leadership, Lamarre is recognized for his expertise in creativity, business strategy, and organizational culture. He authored "Balancing Acts: Unleashing the Power of Creativity in Your Life and Work," sharing insights on creative leadership. Lamarre also co-founded the C2 Montreal conference, a gathering focused on the intersection of creativity and commerce. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and has received honorary doctorates from McGill University, the University of Quebec in Trois-Rivières, and the University of Ottawa. On behalf of Cirque du Soleil, Lamarre accepted the Distinguished Leadership Award for Corporate Citizenship from the Inter-American Dialogue, recognizing the company's work with at-risk youth in Latin America and support of the One Drop Foundation.
