Chip Conley Biography
Chip Conley is a hospitality entrepreneur and New York Times bestselling author known for his work in the boutique hotel and travel industry. At age 26, Conley founded Joie de Vivre Hospitality, transforming an inner-city motel into what became the second-largest boutique hotel brand globally. He served as CEO of the company for 24 years, contributing to the evolution of the boutique hotel movement. Conley explored the intersection of psychology and business in his book, "PEAK: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo from Maslow," which examines how businesses can motivate stakeholders by addressing their higher needs.
Conley received the Pioneer Award, a top honor in the hospitality industry, and holds a BA and MBA from Stanford University, as well as an honorary doctorate in psychology from Saybrook University.
After selling Joie de Vivre Hospitality, Conley joined Airbnb at the invitation of its founders, helping the company scale into a global hospitality platform. As an internal mentor to CEO Brian Chesky, Conley played a key role in shaping Airbnb's culture and growth. His experience at Airbnb inspired his book, "Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder," which advocates for intergenerational collaboration in the workplace.
Drawing from his midlife experiences and research on aging, Conley co-founded Modern Elder Academy in Baja California, Mexico, recognized as the world's first midlife wisdom school. The academy offers programs and retreats, both in person and online, designed to help individuals navigate midlife transitions and develop a renewed sense of purpose. Modern Elder Academy later expanded to a second campus at Saddleback Ranch in New Mexico and has more than 7,000 alumni worldwide.
Conley is the author of several books, including "Wisdom@Work: The Making of a Modern Elder" and "Learning to Love Midlife: 12 Reasons Why Life Gets Better with Age." He has appeared as a guest on Good Morning America and The Today Show, and his work has reached a wide audience through his TED Talks and keynote presentations.
