Barry Strauss Biography
Barry Strauss is the Corliss Page Dean Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution and the Bryce and Edith M. Bowmar Professor of Humanistic Studies Emeritus at Cornell University, where he taught for more than four decades. Strauss holds a doctorate from Yale and a bachelor's degree from Cornell. He is a former chair of Cornell's Department of History and a former director of Cornell's Judith Reppy Institute for Peace and Conflict Studies, where he studied modern military engagements from Bosnia to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Europe. He also served as Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Defense Analysis at the Naval Postgraduate School.
Strauss is recognized for his expertise in ancient military history and has authored or edited numerous books, including "The Battle of Salamis," "The Trojan War," "The Spartacus War," "Masters of Command," "The Death of Caesar," "Ten Caesars," and "The War That Made The Roman Empire." His works have been translated into multiple languages. Strauss also serves as editor of "Turning Points in Ancient History," a series from Princeton University Press.
Strauss's books have received critical attention from publications such as TIME, Wall Street Journal, Barrons, and The Times of London. "The War That Made the Roman Empire: Antony, Cleopatra, and Octavian at Actium" reached the top of Amazon's bestseller list and was named to several best books lists. Strauss is known for his analysis of military strategy, leadership, and the impact of ancient warfare on contemporary conflict and business strategy.
Strauss has appeared on The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, CNN, PBS, and Netflix, and is the host of the podcast "ANTIQUITAS: Leaders and Legends of the Ancient World." At the Hoover Institution, he participates in the Military History in Contemporary Conflict Working Group, contributing research on leadership, strategy, and the relevance of military history.
Strauss has received honors including the Bradley Prize, election to the American Academy of Sciences and Letters, Italy's Lucio Colletti Journalism Prize for Literature, and honorary citizenship of Salamis, Greece. He serves on the editorial boards of MHQ: The Quarterly Journal of Military History, Historically Speaking: The Bulletin of the Historical Society, The International Journal of the Classical Tradition, and Strategika.
