Lord Andrew Roberts Biography
Andrew Roberts, Baron Roberts of Belgravia, is a historian specializing in military history and British political history. Educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he holds an honorary senior scholarship and a PhD, Roberts has authored more than 20 books that have won multiple literary prizes and have been translated into 28 languages. His early works, including "The Holy Fox," a biography of Lord Halifax, and "Eminent Churchillians," established Roberts as a prominent voice in British history. His biography "Salisbury: Victorian Titan" received the Wolfson History Prize and the James Stern Silver Pen Award for Non-Fiction, while "Masters and Commanders"—analyzing the roles of Roosevelt, Churchill, Marshall, and Alanbrooke in the Western theater of World War II—earned the International Churchill Society Book Award. "The Storm of War: A New History of the Second World War" reached number two on the Sunday Times bestseller list and won the British Army Military Book of the Year Award, reinforcing Roberts's expertise in World War II history.
Roberts's later works include "Napoleon: A Life," which won the Los Angeles Times Biography Prize and the Grand Prix of the Fondation Napoléon, and became a New York Times bestseller. His biography "Churchill: Walking with Destiny" became a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller, was translated into nine languages, and won the ICS Churchill Award for Literacy and the Council on Foreign Relations' Arthur Ross Prize. "George III: The Life and Reign of Britain's Most Misunderstood Monarch" received the General Society of Colonial Wars Distinguished Book Award, the History Reclaimed Book of the Year Prize, and the Elizabeth Longford Historical Biography Award. Roberts also co-authored "Conflict: The Evolution of Warfare from 1945 to Gaza" with General David Petraeus, a New York Times bestseller that examines the development of modern warfare.
In addition to his writing, Roberts holds several academic and institutional positions. He is the Bonnie and Tom McCloskey Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, a visiting professor in the War Studies Department at King's College London, and a Lehrman Institute Distinguished Fellow at the New York Historical Society. Roberts is a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Literature and the Royal Historical Society, serves as Chair of the Conservative Party's Committee on Teaching History in Schools, and is President of the History in Prisons Project. He is the founding president of the Cliveden Literary Festival and hosts the podcast "Secrets of Statecraft with Andrew Roberts." Roberts was elevated to the House of Lords as Baron Roberts of Belgravia in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship and public understanding. He is a regular presence on BBC, CNN, and other international media, and co-hosted NBC's live coverage of the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, providing historical context to a global television audience.
