Vincent Guerithault Biography
Chef Vincent Guerithault is recognized as a pioneering figure in Arizona cuisine and a significant influence in the American Southwest culinary scene. Guerithault began his culinary career at age 16, leaving traditional schooling to apprentice at Raymond Thuilier's L'Oustau de Baumaniere in Les Baux de Provence. He continued his training in Paris at Maxim's, spent time at Fauchon, and completed a required service in the French Navy. Guerithault later became the sole chef at a Parisian bistro before moving to the United States to serve as sous chef at Jean Banchet's Le Français in Wheeling, Illinois. Following a move west, he established his culinary legacy in Phoenix, Arizona.
Guerithault earned national attention at his first restaurant in Pinnacle Peak, Arizona. The New York Times food editor Craig Claiborne praised the establishment, highlighting its quality. Guerithault introduced dishes such as duck tamales and smoked salmon quesadillas, blending French culinary techniques with Southwestern ingredients. He opened "Vincent on Camelback" in Phoenix, a restaurant known for its enduring presence and innovative French-Southwestern cuisine.
Throughout his career, Guerithault has received numerous accolades. He was named Best Chef: Southwest by the James Beard Foundation, becoming the first chef in Arizona to receive a James Beard Award. Guerithault was also the first chef to receive a Citation of Excellence from the International Food & Wine Society. He was honored with the Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole and later promoted to Officier de l'Ordre du Mérite Agricole by the Republic of France. "Vincent on Camelback" has been recognized on the World's Top 50 Restaurants list by Restaurant Magazine and ranked #1 for Southwest/Eclectic Restaurant by Ranking Arizona Magazine. The restaurant has also received the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for its wine list.
Guerithault has appeared on the cover of Money magazine and on broadcast programs including The Today Show and Regis & Kathy Lee. His work has been featured in Bon Appétit, Condé Nast Traveler, and Travel Holiday. Guerithault co-authored "Vincent's Cookbook" with Esquire food and wine critic John Mariani, with the book receiving positive reviews from The New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle. He has served on the Board of Directors of the New England Culinary Institute alongside industry leaders such as John Mariani, Chef Mark Miller, and Chef Patrick O'Connell.
