Born in Jamaica to an Indo-Jamaican family, Black learned traditional cooking methods from a young age, including building outdoor clay ovens for his grandmother. At 14, he began working as a kitchen porter at a local resort, where he gained experience in butchering and kitchen operations. Black later participated in a government-sponsored hospitality program and attended Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, graduating with a degree in hotel management and culinary arts. His professional journey includes positions at renowned establishments such as the Peabody Hotel and the Ritz in Paris before settling in Oklahoma City.
In Oklahoma City, Black was hired by the Skirvin Hilton Hotel to open Park Avenue Grill and serve as executive chef. He established himself as a prominent small business owner and culinary innovator through Culinary Edge Concepts, a hospitality group he co-founded. The group operates several restaurants, including Grey Sweater, Black Walnut, and The Gilded Acorn.
