Santa J. Ono Biography
Santa J. Ono is the 15th and current President of University of Michigan. A biomedical scientist, entrepreneur and globally recognized leader in higher education, he has advised governments on education, innovation, science and mental health. He is the current Chair of the University Climate Change Coalition, serving a second term after Janet Napolitano. He has advised Fortune 500 companies and start up companies on research and development.
He was Chief Innovation Advisor for the Province of British Columbia when he was President of the University of British Columbia and on the Boards of Ohio Third Frontier and Uptown Consortium when he was President of University of Cincinnati. He has advocated for enhanced mental health support for students in schools and colleges to school systems, education ministers and government and increased such support at institutions he has led.
A frequent keynote or graduation speaker, he is an elected member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the National Academy of Inventors and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He is a recipient of the Professional Achievement Award from University of Chicago and was inducted into the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars.
