Roderick Townsend Biography
Roderick Townsend-Roberts is an American Paralympic track and field athlete, a two-time Paralympic gold medalist in long jump and high jump, and three-time world championship gold medalist in high jump.
Townsend has been overcoming adversity since his first breath as he was born with damaged nerve endings in his neck resulting in his right arm being much weaker than his left arm. Being born to a single, teenage mother and having a disability has never slowed him down, however.
Before his Paralympic success, he ran Track at Boise State University receiving a full-ride scholarship, where he competed in the decathlon. He then received his master’s degree in Education at Northern Arizona University. While at Boise State, Townsend learned about the Paralympics through a teammate and mentor who encouraged him to compete for Team USA. He went on to win two Gold medals at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, multiple World Championship medals, and participated in multiple disciplines at the Tokyo Paralympic Games in 2021.
In addition to his Paralympic training, Townsend is a Track and Field volunteer coach at the University of Louisville where he and his wife, Tynita, currently reside. Townsend also works as a substitute teacher, and a part-time pushback operator for American Airlines at the Louisville airport.
Outside of sport, Townsend is in the process of starting a scholarship foundation in his hometown of Stockton, CA. He would also love to open a group home for kids in the area to have a safe space to return to each day. He has spoken at schools and corporate events across the country, and has been featured in print publications, internet, and television media, including NBC, People Magazine, Team USA, Paralympics, Yahoo Sports, InTouch Weekly, and the Washington Post.

Stockton native Townsend nominated for ESPY
Roderick Townsend felt over-heated and under-fed. So the world record-holding track and field athlete had tunnel vision driving to his friend’s house after a brutal workout at Delta College last week, during the area’s worst heat wave in more than a decade. Townsend, a double Paralympic gold medalist in the men’s long jump and high jump, wanted to replenish those calories he’d burned.
