Melissa Stockwell Biography
Melissa Stockwell is an American war veteran, paratriathlete, and advocate for adaptive sports. Stockwell graduated from the University of Colorado and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. While deployed to Baghdad, Iraq, she lost her left leg above the knee after a roadside bomb struck her Humvee. Following multiple surgeries and infections, she was medically retired from the Army. Stockwell is recognized as the first female soldier to lose a limb in active combat and has received both the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart.
After her injury, Stockwell turned to adaptive sports as a path to recovery. She became the first Iraq War veteran to qualify for the Beijing Paralympics, where she was selected by Team USA athletes as the flag bearer for the closing ceremony. Transitioning to paratriathlon, Stockwell became a three-time world champion and earned a Paralympic bronze medal in paratriathlon at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. She has represented Team USA in multiple Paralympic Games, finishing fifth in both her third and fourth appearances.
Stockwell co-founded Dare2tri with Keri Serota and Dan Tun, a nonprofit organization focused on adaptive sports and fitness. Dare2tri works to remove barriers to sports participation and fosters a supportive community for athletes of all abilities. Stockwell is among 20 athletes to receive the P&G Athletes for Good grant, supporting the expansion of Dare2tri's programs.
Stockwell is the author of "The Power of Choice: My Journey from Wounded Warrior to World Champion," which details her experiences in the military, her recovery, and her achievements in adaptive sports. She shares her story and insights at events for corporations, military organizations, charities, government agencies, and schools, contributing to conversations on resilience, leadership, and inclusion in sports and the military.

Melissa was so great to work with! Even two weeks after our event, I'm still hearing praise and positive feedback about having had Melissa as our keynote. We have never had a virtual speaker at our annual convocation and I was concerned we might have some negative comments about not having some present in person. But...the message and the story were so captivating and moving, all we've received is tons of validating feedback that she was the perfect choice!

Melissa was absolutely phenomenal! The feedback we received during and post-event have been beyond positive. She was able to connect with so many different people, her message was clear and powerful. It was an absolute pleasure having her speak to our MKS U.S. employees. Not that she needs it, but I will sing her praises to anyone who will listen.
