Robin Morgan Biography
Robin Morgan is a poet, novelist, journalist, and a significant figure in the history of American and international feminism. Since the early 1960s, Morgan has been a key radical feminist member of the American women's movement and a leader in the international feminist movement. Before her work as an activist and author, Morgan gained recognition as a performer; by age four, she hosted her own radio program, "The Little Robin Morgan Show," on New York station WOR, which was syndicated nationally. She was cast as Dagmar Hansen in the CBS TV series "Mama," a drama-comedy about a Norwegian-American family, and her performance in the featured role made her a child celebrity. Morgan later left acting to pursue poetry and political activism, becoming a founding member of radical feminist organizations including New York Radical Women and W.I.T.C.H.
Morgan's anthology "Sisterhood Is Powerful" has been widely credited with helping to start the contemporary feminist movement and was cited by New York Public Library as one of the 100 most influential books of the 20th century. The book, described as the primer that started the modern women's movement, was the first comprehensive collection of writings from the then-new wave of feminism and became a best-seller in both cloth and paperback. Morgan coined the term "herstory" in the anthology and designed the now-universal logo of the women's movement—a raised fist in the female gender symbol. She also funded the Sisterhood Is Powerful Fund, the first feminist foundation in the United States, with royalties from the book. Morgan went on to edit two follow-up volumes: "Sisterhood Is Global: The International Women's Movement Anthology," which compiled articles about women in more than 70 countries, and "Sisterhood Is Forever: The Women's Anthology for a New Millennium," a retrospective and blueprint for the feminist movement.
Morgan has written more than 20 books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction, and served as editor of Ms. magazine. As editor-in-chief of Ms., she relaunched the magazine as an international, ad-free bimonthly publication, later becoming consulting global editor. Her nonfiction works include the best-selling "The Demon Lover: The Roots of Terrorism" and the memoir "Saturday's Child." Her poetry collections—including "Monster," "Lady of the Beasts," and "Depth Perception"—have received critical attention. Two books of poems, "Lady of the Beasts" and "Depth Perception," earned reviews in Poetry Magazine.
Morgan founded the Sisterhood Is Global Institute, the first international feminist think tank, and co-founded the Women's Media Center with Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem. Her organizational work includes founding or co-founding the Feminist Women's Health Network, the National Battered Women's Refuge Network, Media Women, the National Network of Rape Crisis Centers, the Feminist Writers' Guild, the Women's Foreign Policy Council, and the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Morgan is also the writer, producer, and host of the weekly radio and online webcast and podcast program, "Women's Media Center Live with Robin Morgan," which features political commentary and interviews with literary and political guests.
Morgan's contributions to feminism, human rights, and journalism have been recognized with numerous honors, including the National Endowment for the Arts prize in poetry, the Feminist Majority Foundation Woman of the Year Award, and the Front Page Award for Distinguished Journalism. She has received an honorary degree as Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Connecticut and a Lifetime Achievement in Human Rights from Equality Now. Morgan was also listed as one of BBC's 100 Women. Her work continues to influence the fields of feminism, women's rights, and social justice.
