Robert Swan Biography
Robert Swan, OBE, is a polar explorer and environmental advocate recognized as the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles. Swan developed an interest in polar exploration while studying ancient history at the University of Durham, inspired by the story of Robert Falcon Scott's Antarctic expedition. This interest led him to dedicate years to planning and undertaking his own expeditions, shaping his career in exploration and environmental advocacy.
Swan led the expedition "In the Footsteps of Scott," a 900-mile trek to the South Pole, which stands as the longest unassisted march recorded. He later led "Icewalk," guiding a multinational team of eight to the North Pole. By completing both journeys unassisted by the age of 33, Swan became the first person to achieve this milestone. The expeditions exposed him to the effects of climate change and ozone depletion, experiences that influenced his transition from explorer to environmental activist.
Motivated by a mission from ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau, Swan founded the 2041 Foundation, a nonprofit organization focused on preserving Antarctica as a natural reserve for science and peace. The foundation's name references the year when the international moratorium on Antarctic mining is scheduled for renegotiation. Swan has led expeditions to Antarctica with students and business leaders, and his teams contributed to the design and construction of the world's first Antarctic renewable energy education station. He also led the "South Pole Energy Challenge," an expedition powered entirely by renewable energy. Swan is the co-author of the book "Antarctica 2041: My Quest to Save the Earth's Last Wilderness," which details his efforts to protect Antarctica. He completed a decades-long goal of crossing the entire Antarctic landmass on foot.
Swan's work in environmental education and leadership has been recognized with honors including the Polar Medal and appointment as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. He has served as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for Youth, a United Nations Environment Program Goodwill Ambassador, and Special Envoy to the Director General of UNESCO. Swan is a recipient of the Humanitarian Innovation Lifetime Achievement Award. As a keynote speaker, he has addressed the United Nations World Summit for Sustainable Development, the World Economic Forum, the Corporate Eco Forum, and major corporations. Through his expeditions and advocacy, Swan promotes sustainability, climate change awareness, and environmental leadership.
