Alexandra Cousteau Biography
Alexandra Cousteau is a filmmaker, environmental activist, and advocate for ocean and water conservation. As the granddaughter of ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau and daughter of Philippe Cousteau Sr., Cousteau was introduced to exploration early in life. She participated in her first expedition with her parents as an infant and learned to scuba dive at age seven under the guidance of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. These early experiences influenced her enduring commitment to marine conservation and environmental advocacy.
Throughout her career, Cousteau has led expeditions, co-hosted Discovery Channel's "Blue August" with her brother Philippe Cousteau Jr., and directed and produced the "Expedition Blue Planet" series. She co-founded EarthEcho International with her brother to advance science, advocacy, and education, and later established Blue Legacy International to highlight the importance of global water systems. Her five-month "Expedition Blue Planet: North America" explored water issues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico and became National Geographic's first interactive expedition, utilizing social media for real-time conservation storytelling. Cousteau also wrote and produced the short documentary "Drill, Spill, Repeat."
Cousteau co-founded Oceans 2050, an initiative focused on restoring ocean abundance through marine afforestation, seaweed farming, and blue carbon markets. As president, she has overseen the organization's work quantifying carbon sequestration by seaweed farms in multiple countries, earning the Keeling Curve Prize. She also serves as a senior advisor to Oceana, contributing to global campaigns for marine ecosystem protection and restoration. Her advocacy includes engaging with policymakers, industry leaders, fisher communities, and NGOs worldwide, and she has provided testimony on ocean policy before the U.S. Congress.

She has been named an Earth Trustee by the United Nations and received an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters from Georgetown University, where she studied international relations.
