Conrad Anker Biography
Conrad Anker is a mountaineer known for his achievements in alpinism and high-altitude climbing. Anker has completed numerous first ascents and expeditions, including alpine climbs in the Alaska Range, rock ascents in Yosemite and Zion, and international expeditions in regions such as Pakistan, Patagonia, and Antarctica. As a founding member of the North Face Athlete Team, Anker served as the team's leader for 26 years.
Anker gained global recognition through his involvement in the discovery of the remains of George Mallory on Mount Everest. He has summited Everest three times, including a climb during which he and his team located Mallory, one of two climbers who disappeared while attempting Everest in 1924. Anker also free-climbed the Second Step, a rock face at 28,300 feet typically climbed using a fixed ladder. He co-authored the book "The Lost Explorer: Finding Mallory on Mount Everest" with David Roberts and appeared in the documentary "The Wildest Dream," which retraces Mallory's steps on Everest.
Anker, along with Jimmy Chin and Renan Ozturk, completed the first ascent of the Meru Shark's Fin in India. Their journey was documented in the film "Meru," which won the U.S. Audience Documentary Award at Sundance Film Festival and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Anker's life and career are also explored in the National Geographic documentary "Torn."
Anker has received several honors, including the Golden Piton Lifetime Achievement Award from Climbing magazine, the David A. Brower Award from the American Alpine Club, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Utah. He co-founded the Khumbu Climbing Center in Phortse, Nepal, which provides safety training for high-altitude workers. In addition to his climbing achievements, Anker is recognized as a mentor, historian of the sport, and advocate for responsible expedition culture within the mountaineering community.
