Premal Shah Biography
Premal Shah is an Indian-American entrepreneur and social innovator recognized as a co-founder of Kiva.org, a crowdfunding nonprofit that has facilitated more than $2 billion in loans for low-income entrepreneurs in over 80 countries. Shah began his career as one of PayPal's first product managers and is a graduate of Stanford University. His interest in microfinance developed during a sabbatical from PayPal, when he worked on a peer-to-peer lending concept in India. While volunteering at the Gandhi Ashram, Shah deepened his understanding of Gandhi's teachings on compassion and truth, which influenced his professional path. After returning to Silicon Valley, Shah and three colleagues left PayPal to establish Kiva.
Kiva.org was co-founded to allow individuals to make loans as small as $25 to support emerging businesses. As one of the first crowdfunding platforms, Kiva launched before sites such as GoFundMe. During Shah's tenure as president, the platform expanded globally, enabling crowdfunding loans from small donors to entrepreneurs, with 8 in 10 loans supporting women and a repayment rate of 96 percent. The site has been recognized as one of Oprah's Favorite Things and included in the Top 50 Website list by TIME Magazine. Shah played a key role in transforming Kiva from a small experiment in internet microlending into a globally recognized platform.
Shah has been acknowledged as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, an Obama White House Champion of Change, and included in Fortune magazine's "40 Under 40" list. He was nominated as a Visionary of the Year by the San Francisco Chronicle and received the Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship. Shah has spoken at major events such as the Clinton Global Initiative and the Global Microcredit Summit. The Carnegie Corporation of New York has also honored Shah for his work with Kiva.
Shah transitioned from president to senior advisor at Kiva before becoming president of Branch International, a company providing app-based microfinance services across India and Africa. Branch International is an AI-driven microfinance platform that leverages data science to reduce the cost of delivering financial services in emerging markets. Shah also co-founded Renewables.org, which he chairs, an investment platform dedicated to supporting renewable energy projects in emerging markets. In addition, Shah serves on the boards of several nonprofits, including Center for Humane Technology, Change.org Foundation, Watsi, and VolunteerMatch, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to leveraging technology for social impact.
