Peter Orszag Biography
Peter R. Orszag is CEO and chairman of Lazard, a global financial advisory and asset management firm. Orszag was elected by Lazard's board to serve as CEO after previously leading the firm's financial advisory business and serving as global co-head of its healthcare practice. He joined Lazard as managing director and vice chairman of investment banking.
Orszag's career spans finance, public policy, and academia. He served as director of the Office of Management and Budget in the Obama administration, where he contributed to the development of the Affordable Care Act and legislative priorities such as the economic stimulus bill. Orszag played a key role in establishing the Independent Payment Advisory Board, which was authorized to recommend changes to the Medicare program. He also served as director of the Congressional Budget Office, where he expanded the agency's focus on health care and climate change. Earlier in his government service, Orszag worked in the Clinton administration at the Council of Economic Advisers and as special assistant to the president for economic policy.
Before joining Lazard, Orszag was vice chairman of corporate and investment banking and chairman of the Financial Strategy and Solutions Group at Citigroup. He has been a distinguished visiting fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations and a contributing columnist at New York Times. Orszag has also written for Bloomberg View, covering topics such as bipartisanship, the American class divide, unemployment, and economic policy. His academic work includes hundreds of published articles and several books, and as a senior fellow at Brookings, he co-founded and directed the Hamilton Project.
Orszag has coauthored or co-edited books including "Aging Gracefully: Ideas to Improve Retirement Security in America," "Saving Social Security: A Balanced Approach," and "American Economic Policy in the 1990s." In collaboration with economist Peter Diamond, Orszag explored strategies for preserving Social Security in "Saving Social Security: A Balanced Approach." His research and writing address economic challenges such as health care costs, retirement security, and fiscal sustainability.
Orszag is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Aspen Economic Strategy Group. He serves on the boards of the Institute for Advanced Study, the Peterson Institute for International Economics, and Mount Sinai Hospital. Orszag holds an honorary doctorate from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, graduated summa cum laude in economics from Princeton University, and earned a doctorate in economics from the London School of Economics as a Marshall Scholar. His background in global finance, public policy, and economic research positions him as a leading authority on fiscal policy, healthcare economics, and financial markets.
