Thomas J. Sargent Biography
Thomas J. Sargent is recognized as a pioneer of the rational expectations revolution in macroeconomics, with foundational contributions to macroeconomics, monetary economics, and time series econometrics. Sargent was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics with Christopher A. Sims for their empirical research on cause and effect in the macroeconomy. Sargent helped develop rational expectations theory, which asserts that some economic outcomes are at least partially determined by people's rational expectations.
Alongside Robert Lucas Jr., Sargent advanced the rational expectations approach in macroeconomics. In collaboration with Neil Wallace, Sargent contributed to theoretical macroeconomics, including the saddle-path stability characterization of the rational expectations equilibrium and the policy ineffectiveness proposition for monetary policy. His work in learning theory explores how agents with imperfect knowledge of the economy attempt to improve their understanding over time. Sargent's research includes significant contributions to learning theory and economic history, with influential studies on monetary standards and international episodes of inflation.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Sargent has influenced how economists analyze the interactions between government policy and economic outcomes, the dynamics of inflation and hyperinflation, and the fiscal consequences of war and public debt. His major works include "Rational Expectations and Econometric Practice" with Robert E. Lucas Jr., "Recursive Macroeconomic Theory" with Lars Ljungqvist, "Robustness" with Lars Peter Hansen, and "The Big Problem of Small Change" with François Velde. Additional books include "Dynamic Programming" and "Economic Networks: Theory and Computation," both with John Stachurski and published by Cambridge University Press.
Sargent has held named chairs at the University of Chicago and Stanford University. He is a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution and holds the William R. Berkley Professorship of Economics and Business at New York University, as well as the Donald L. Lucas Professorship in Economics, Emeritus, at Stanford University. Sargent is a past president of the Econometric Society, the American Economic Association, and the Society for Economic Dynamics.
Sargent was a university medalist as Most Distinguished Scholar in his graduating class and received the Nemmers Prize in Economics. He was elected a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Sargent has also been recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. His work spans mathematical theory, empirical policy analysis, and economic history, contributing to the understanding of modern economies.
