Maydianne Andrade Biography
Dr. Maydianne Andrade is a Canadian evolutionary ecologist recognized for her expertise in black widow spider research. Andrade holds a Bachelor of Science from Simon Fraser University, a Master of Science from University of Toronto Mississauga, and a doctorate in neurobiology and behavior from Cornell University. Her research focuses on using cannibalistic black widow spiders as models to study how natural selection shapes mating behaviors, life history traits, and the processes that drive species diversification and invasiveness. At the University of Toronto Scarborough, Andrade's laboratory maintains one of the largest captive populations of black widow spiders, housing multiple species and nearly 100,000 individuals.
Andrade is known for her work on the mating habits of Australian redback spiders, demonstrating how male behavior during mating can influence reproductive success, even in the context of sexual cannibalism. Over her career, Andrade has expanded her research to encompass behavioral and evolutionary ecology, biodiversity, gene expression, and the relationship between ecology, behavior, and evolution. Her studies have established widow spiders as a model taxon in behavioral ecology and evolutionary biology, and her research is cited in Biology, Evolution, and Behavioral Ecology textbooks at various educational levels.
Andrade is a Fellow of the Animal Behaviour Society and has received several research awards, including a University Faculty Award from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, a Premier's Research Excellence Award from the Government of Ontario, and an African Canadian Achievement Award for Excellence in Science. She has served as a Canada Research Chair in Integrative Behavioural Ecology and is an Honorary International Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Andrade is also a Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society, which awarded her the Lawrence J. Burpee Medal for achievement and science leadership. Additional honors include the Pitelka Award from the International Society for Behavioral Ecology and the Exemplar Award from the Animal Behavior Society.
After a 25-year tenure in Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto, where she attained the rank of University Professor, Andrade joined York University as Dean of the Faculty of Science. She has contributed to science communication as the concept creator, story editor, and cast member for "Bug Sex: It's Complicated" and as the on-air host and narrator for "First Animals," a Nature of Things documentary. Andrade's work has been featured on NOVA ScienceNow and in interviews on CBC Radio's "Quirks and Quarks."
In addition to her scientific research, Andrade is a national advocate for equity and inclusion in academia. She is the founder and senior advisor of the Toronto Initiative for Diversity and Excellence and co-founder and inaugural president of the Canadian Black Scientists Network. Through initiatives such as the BE-STEMM conference and the Youth National Science Fair, Andrade supports Black professionals and students in STEM fields. She received the Trailblazer Award from the Canadian Science Policy Centre for her efforts to advance inclusive practices and policy in science and academia.
