Lionel Barber Biography
Lionel Barber is recognized for his leadership in global journalism, notably during his tenure as editor of Financial Times. Barber began his journalism career as a reporter for The Scotsman, earning the Young Journalist of the Year award at the British Press Awards. He later joined The Sunday Times as a business correspondent before moving to Financial Times, where he held positions including Washington correspondent, Brussels bureau chief, news editor, and US managing editor.
As editor, Barber guided Financial Times through a significant digital transformation, increasing its paying readership to more than 1 million, with a majority subscribing digitally. Under his direction, the publication received multiple honors, including three "Newspaper of the Year" titles in Britain, as well as awards from the British Journalism Awards, Gerald Loeb, Overseas Press Club, and the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Barber also oversaw the acquisition of Financial Times by Nikkei, expanding the newspaper's global reach.
