Jim Sciutto Biography
Jim Sciutto is a national security journalist who serves as CNN's chief national security analyst and anchor. He reports and provides analysis on U.S. national security, including foreign policy, the military, the intelligence community, and the State Department. Sciutto anchors "The Brief with Jim Sciutto" on CNN International and streaming for CNN subscribers. His career includes on-the-ground reporting experience and government service, offering insight into global affairs.
Sciutto began his career as the moderator and producer of a weekly public affairs talk show on PBS. He then served as Hong Kong correspondent for Asia Business News, covering the return of Hong Kong to China. Prior to joining CNN, Sciutto was ABC News' senior foreign correspondent, based in London, and the Hong Kong-based correspondent for Asia Business News. He has reported from more than 50 countries, including assignments in Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine, and the Middle East. Before returning to journalism, Sciutto served as chief of staff and senior advisor to the U.S. Ambassador to China, Gary Locke, a role that deepened his expertise in diplomacy and U.S.-China relations.
Sciutto is a graduate of Yale University, where he studied Chinese history, and was a Fulbright Fellow in Hong Kong. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an associate fellow at Pierson College at Yale, and was appointed a senior fellow at Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs.
As an author, Sciutto has written several books on global security, including the New York Times bestseller "The Return of Great Powers: Russia, China and the Next World War," which examines the breakdown of the international order. He also wrote "The Shadow War" on Russian and Chinese efforts to undermine the U.S., "The Madman Theory: Trump Takes on the World," and "Against Us: The New Face of America's Enemies in the Muslim World."
Sciutto's journalism has earned him honors such as Emmy Awards, the Edward R. Murrow Award, the George Polk Award, the Dupont-Columbia Award, and the White House Correspondents' Association's Merriman Smith Award for excellence in presidential coverage. Along with CNN colleagues Jake Tapper, Carl Bernstein, and Evan Perez, Sciutto received the Merriman Smith Award in the broadcast category for their report on the intelligence community's assessment regarding Russia and then President-elect Trump. His background in field reporting, government service, academic engagement, and authorship positions him as a leading voice on national security and international affairs.
