Mike Rothmiller Biography
Mike Rothmiller is a New York Times bestselling author, Pulitzer Prize nominee, historian, former police officer, and Army medic whose career spans law enforcement, investigative journalism, and publishing. Rothmiller served for 10 years with the Los Angeles Police Department, including five years as a deep undercover detective with the Organized Crime Intelligence Division. At age 27, he became the youngest person assigned to the division. He was also a member of the U.S. Department of Justice Organized Crime Strike Force and provided secret Grand Jury testimony regarding the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy. After surviving an assassination attempt, Rothmiller left the department and transitioned to television reporting.
His first book, "L.A. Secret Police: Inside the Elite LAPD Spy Network," became a Los Angeles Times and New York Times bestseller, selling 300,000 print copies. The book's revelations about corruption, racism, false arrest, and brutality had a significant impact on the fields of politics and policing. Following its publication, the newly appointed Los Angeles Police Department Chief of Police Willie L. Williams ordered both offices of the Organized Crime Intelligence Division closed and padlocked. Rothmiller has since authored an extensive catalog of investigative nonfiction, with works examining the hidden forces behind prominent American figures and events. His book "Bombshell: The Night Bobby Kennedy Killed Marilyn Monroe," co-authored with Douglas Thompson, was optioned for adaptation and had its documentary rights acquired. As a detective, Rothmiller had direct access to hundreds of restricted Los Angeles Police Department files related to the events at Marilyn Monroe's California home.
In addition to his writing, Rothmiller has worked as a television reporter, documentary producer, and television host for ESPN, PBS, and other international markets. He has written and produced more than 25 television documentaries, as well as numerous television and radio advertisements and movie scripts. His nonfiction book "My Hero, Military, Kids Write About Their Moms and Dads" received international recognition and is the only book to feature forewords by three living presidents and General Norman Schwarzkopf. Rothmiller has also served as a corporate president and CEO, directed three divisions of Sony Electronics EMCS-America, and briefed the President of the United States.
Rothmiller is a regular commentator on law enforcement and global intelligence matters. His readership includes three presidents, former First Lady Laura Bush, Charlton Heston, and Queen Elizabeth II, and he has been interviewed by media outlets in 25 countries. His book "Secrets, Lies and Deception….And Other Amazing Pieces of History" has been featured on Fox News and more than 40 television news stations across the United States. With a career bridging covert intelligence, investigative journalism, and popular history, Rothmiller offers firsthand authority in his exploration of crime, law enforcement, and American history.
