Jean Case Biography
Jean Case is an American businesswoman, philanthropist, investor, and technology pioneer whose career spans the private sector, civic leadership, and innovative philanthropy. Before founding the Case Foundation, Case was a senior executive at America Online, where she directed marketing and branding efforts that contributed to AOL's widespread adoption. Her private sector experience, including her tenure at AOL, spanned nearly two decades before she co-founded the Case Foundation. The Case Foundation is recognized for its innovative approach to philanthropy, social impact investing, and nonprofit sector leadership.
Case served as chairman of the National Geographic Society board of trustees and was the first woman to hold the position. During her leadership, National Geographic expanded its digital strategy and global reach, with Nat Geo reaching hundreds of millions of people each month and becoming a leading social media brand. Case also helped create and serves on the board of National Geographic Partners, a global media and travel joint venture with the Walt Disney Company.
Case launched the Case Impact Network to advance impact investing and support companies integrating social impact into their business models. She also launched For What It's Worth to expand interest in investing for social good and provide resources, news, and trends for new investors seeking both profit and purpose. Case was appointed by President George W. Bush to chair the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation and served as an advisor to the U.S. National Advisory Board to the Social Impact Investing Task Force, established by the G8.
Case is the author of "Be Fearless: 5 Principles for a Life of Breakthroughs and Purpose," published by Simon & Schuster, which outlines five principles for innovation and social impact. The book discusses making bold moves, learning from failure, reaching beyond immediate circles, preparing for the unexpected, and leveraging optimism. Case has spoken candidly about professional setbacks, including the challenges of the PlayPumps initiative, which aimed to bring clean drinking water to sub-Saharan Africa, establishing her as a credible voice on resilience and leadership in the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors.
Case was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has received honorary degrees from Indiana University and George Mason University. She and her husband have been recognized for their work in philanthropy by Barron's "25 Best Givers" and as Washingtonians of the Year. Case also serves on the boards of the White House Historical Association and the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum.
