Gerard Baker Biography
Gerard Baker is a journalist with a career spanning more than three decades at major news organizations. He was educated at Corpus Christi College at Oxford University, graduating with a first-class honors degree in philosophy, politics and economics. Baker began his career at BBC, working as a producer, U.S. producer, and economics correspondent for television and radio. He later joined Financial Times, serving as Tokyo correspondent, where he reported on the country's financial crisis, and as Washington bureau chief, leading a team of 10 correspondents and providing analysis of the Federal Reserve. Baker subsequently became U.S. editor and an assistant editor of The Times of London, writing news and commentary and overseeing U.S. coverage for the newspaper and its online editions.
Before his appointment as editor-in-chief, Baker served as The Wall Street Journal's deputy editor-in-chief and later as Dow Jones' managing editor and The Wall Street Journal's editor-in-chief. During his tenure, he oversaw the publication through a period of digital transformation. Baker was the first British citizen to moderate a U.S. presidential debate, co-hosting a Republican primary debate watched live by millions.
Baker currently serves as editor-at-large of The Wall Street Journal, writing a weekly column for the editorial page titled "Free Expression," and hosting "WSJ at Large with Gerry Baker," a weekly news and current affairs interview show on Fox Business Network. He also hosts the WSJ Opinion podcast "Free Expression," where he interviews writers, influencers, and thinkers on topics related to politics, economics, and society.
Baker is the author of "American Breakdown: Why We No Longer Trust Our Leaders and Institutions and How We Can Rebuild Confidence," which examines the erosion of trust in American institutions, including government, business, media, and medicine. Drawing on his experience reporting from Tokyo, Washington, London, and New York, and leading a global business news publication, Baker provides analysis of the forces shaping politics, economics, and society.
