George Hincapie Biography
George Hincapie is recognized as a prominent figure in cycling. He developed an early interest in the sport, excelling as a junior by winning 10 national titles and two world medals before advancing to the professional ranks. Over a 19-year professional career, Hincapie competed in 17 Ronde van Vlaanderen races, finished second at Paris-Roubaix—the highest placement for an American—and participated in the Tour de France 17 times, securing three U.S. National Road Race championships.
A four-time Olympian, Hincapie specialized in single-day events and was regarded as a leading American Classics rider, focusing on the challenging single-day races in Northern Europe. He also served as a key domestique for Alberto Contador and Cadel Evans, both of whom won the Tour de France with his support. Hincapie is among the few Americans to have worn the Yellow Jersey in the Tour de France. His individual victories include the Gent–Wevelgem classic and the Three Days of De Panne stage race.
Hincapie's career spanned a period marked by significant challenges in professional cycling, including the era of doping scandals. He has addressed this period in his memoir, "The Loyal Lieutenant," co-written with Craig Hummer, offering insight into the complexities of the sport during that time.
Following his retirement from professional cycling, Hincapie pursued a business career, operating Hincapie Sportswear and Hotel Domestique in South Carolina. He remains active in the cycling community as a team manager and cycling commentator. His annual ride weekend at Hotel Domestique has become a notable event, attracting participants from various fields, including sports and entertainment.
