Danny Wuerffel Biography
Danny Wuerffel is recognized in college football for his achievements as quarterback, notably leading the University of Florida Gators to four SEC Championships and the program's first national football championship. Wuerffel set 17 NCAA and University of Florida records, led the nation in touchdown passes, and was named SEC Player of the Year twice. His collegiate career culminated with the Heisman Trophy, following in the footsteps of his coach. Wuerffel became the first player to win both the Heisman Trophy and the National Football Foundation's William V. Campbell Trophy. Additional honors include the Walter Camp Player of the Year, Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, Unitas Golden Arm, and the Sammy Baugh Trophy. He graduated from the University of Florida with high honors in public relations.
Following his college career, Wuerffel was selected in the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints and played six seasons in the league with the Saints, Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, and Washington Redskins. He also played in NFL Europe, leading the Rhein Fire to a league championship in World Bowl 2000. Wuerffel began volunteering with Desire Street Ministries while playing for the Saints, engaging with youth and supporting community development initiatives.
After retiring from professional football, Wuerffel returned to New Orleans to work with Desire Street Ministries, a nonprofit focused on supporting underserved neighborhoods through spiritual and community development. He became executive director as the organization expanded its outreach beyond New Orleans, relocating its headquarters to Atlanta and serving communities across the southern United States. Under Wuerffel's leadership, Desire Street Ministries implemented a holistic approach to community development, emphasizing leadership training, mentorship, and support for families facing economic and social challenges.
Wuerffel has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Sugar Bowl Hall of Fame. He has served as a presidential appointee to the White House Council for Service and Civic Participation, a member of the Board of Directors for Professional Athletes Outreach, and a national spokesman for Caps Kids. The All Sports Association established the Wuerffel Trophy to honor college football players who demonstrate excellence in community service. Wuerffel serves as president of the Wuerffel Foundation, continuing his work in leadership development and community engagement. His experience as a Heisman Trophy winner and advocate for underserved communities positions him as a speaker on leadership, service, and the broader impact of sports.
