Børge Ousland Biography
Børge Ousland is a polar explorer known for his extensive expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Born in Oslo, he began his professional career as a saturation diver in the North Sea before serving in the Norwegian Navy Special Forces. Ousland's early adventures included a ski traverse of Greenland, which sparked his interest in polar exploration. Following in the footsteps of fellow Norwegians Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, he has completed numerous challenging journeys in polar environments.
Ousland and Erling Kagge became the first to reach the North Pole unsupported. Later, Ousland completed the first solo, unsupported journey to the North Pole. He also achieved a solo crossing of Antarctica, becoming the first person to cross the continent alone and unsupported, covering 1,864 miles from the Ronne Ice Shelf to the Ross Ice Shelf. This expedition set a record for the fastest unsupported journey to the South Pole in 34 days. His accomplishments are attributed to careful logistical planning, psychological resilience, and expertise in navigating extreme environments.
In collaboration with adventurer Mike Horn, Ousland undertook a journey to the North Pole during the full Arctic night, successfully completing the expedition after months of travel. Together, they completed a trek across the frozen Arctic Ocean via the North Pole during the Arctic winter night. Ousland also achieved the first circumnavigation of the North Pole aboard the trimaran sailboat The Northern Passage. Through his expeditions, he has observed significant changes in the Arctic, including a 30 percent decrease in ice coverage and reductions in ice thickness.
Ousland has contributed to environmental awareness through the Ice Legacy Project, which documents and raises awareness about the world's largest glaciers and their decline. As part of this initiative, he has crossed some of the 20 largest icefields on earth to highlight the importance of snow and ice for sustaining life. He is the author of 11 books on polar exploration, including "The Great Polar Journey," which received first prize in the Adventure category at the Banff Mountain Book Festival. His other books include "Alone to the North Pole," "Alone across Antarctica," and "Northern Passage." Through his books, films, and lectures, Ousland shares insights into the changing Arctic environment and the challenges of polar expeditions.
Ousland received the Royal Geographical Society's Founder's Medal in recognition of his contributions to polar exploration, joining previous recipients such as Sir David Attenborough and Neil Armstrong. His work emphasizes resilience, climate change, and the complexities of human endurance in extreme environments.
