Jimmy Chin Biography
Jimmy Chin is an Asian American professional mountain athlete, National Geographic photographer, Academy Award-winning film director, and New York Times bestselling author. Chin has built a dual career as an adventure athlete and visual storyteller, recognized for both his climbing and skiing achievements and his work in adventure photography and documentary filmmaking. His career began after college when a photograph of his climbing partner sold for $500, marking the start of his journey as a mountain photographer and adventure filmmaker.
Chin completed the first ascent of the Shark's Fin on Mount Meru and is among the few to ski from the summit of Mount Everest. He has participated in expeditions across all seven continents, leading and documenting cutting-edge adventures. Under the mentorship of Conrad Anker, Chin worked as a cinematographer for a National Geographic–sponsored trek across Tibet's Chang Tang Plateau, which helped launch his photography career. His images have appeared in National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, Outside Magazine, and other major publications.
As a filmmaker, Chin directed "Meru," a documentary chronicling his and his team's attempts to climb the Shark's Fin of Mount Meru. The film received a nationwide theatrical release and was short-listed for the Academy Awards. His subsequent film, "Free Solo," documented Alex Honnold's rope-free ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite and won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. "Free Solo" achieved record-breaking box office success for a documentary.
Chin's documentary "The Rescue" covers the Tham Luang cave rescue and earned an Emmy Award, as well as an Academy Award shortlist. His first scripted feature, "Nyad," tells the story of Diana Nyad's swim from Cuba to Florida and received Academy Award, Golden Globe, and SAG nominations for its lead actors. Chin also directed "Endurance," a documentary about Ernest Shackleton's Trans-Antarctic expedition and the rediscovery of his ship. His project "Everest North" documents Jim Morrison's ski descent of Everest's north side.
Chin's photography book, "There and Back," became a New York Times bestseller. He has received the Ken Burns American Heritage Prize, the Navy SEAL Foundation's Fire in the Gut Award, and the National Geographic Photographer's Photographer Award. As a speaker, Chin addresses topics such as leadership, risk management, resilience, and creative problem-solving, drawing on his experiences in extreme environments and adventure sports.
