Andy Dunn

Keynote Speaker: Entrepreneur & Direct-to-Consumer Retail Pioneer; Co-Founder & Former CEO of Bonobos; Author of "Burn Rate"

Andy Dunn Biography

Andy Dunn is an entrepreneur, author, and investor recognized for co-founding Bonobos, a menswear brand that played a significant role in the digitally native, direct-to-consumer retail movement. Dunn co-founded Bonobos and served as chief executive officer for its first decade, pioneering the digitally native brand model and introducing the inventory-free store concept known as guideshops. This approach influenced the development of an ecosystem of direct-to-consumer brands in New York City, including Warby Parker, Harry's, Glossier, Allbirds, and Away. Bonobos was acquired for $310 million, after which Dunn joined Walmart to oversee its portfolio of direct-to-consumer brands.

In addition to his work at Bonobos, Dunn has been active as an investor and entrepreneur. As an angel investor and founder of Red Swan, a seed-stage venture capital fund, Dunn has supported more than 100 startups, including Warby Parker, Coinbase, and Hinge. He also founded Pie, a social app designed to facilitate platonic friendships, which operates in Chicago, San Francisco, and Austin.

Dunn is the author of the national bestselling memoir, "Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind." The book, published by Penguin Random House, explores Dunn's experiences with entrepreneurship and bipolar disorder, offering insight into mental health challenges in the startup world. "Burn Rate" has been recognized by Forbes and Amazon and is the subject of a forthcoming TV show.

Dunn has publicly discussed his diagnosis of bipolar disorder, sharing his story through his autobiography, public talks, and a TED Talk. He has spoken at venues such as Stanford University's Entrepreneurial Thought Leaders series and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, addressing topics at the intersection of entrepreneurship and mental health. Dunn is a graduate of Northwestern University and the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

The Role of Delusion in Innovation

Andy Dunn uses his own story to help us all rethink our attitude toward innovation, reality — and delusion.

Burn Rate: Launching a Startup and Losing My Mind

At twenty-eight, fresh from Stanford’s MBA program and steeped in the move-fast-and-break-things ethos of Silicon Valley, Andy Dunn was on top of the world. He was building Bonobos, a new kind of startup—a digitally native, direct-to-consumer brand—out of his Manhattan apartment. As Dunn’s business began to take off, however, some of the very traits that powered his success as a founder—relentless drive, confidence bordering on hubris, and ambition verging on delusion—were now threatening to undo him. As he struggled to keep the startup afloat, Dunn was haunted by a ghost: a diagnosis of bipolar disorder he received after a frightening manic episode in college.

In this conversation, Dunn offers an unconventional look at the entrepreneurial journey, a parable for the twenty-first-century economy, and a revelatory look at the prevalence of mental illness in the startup community. With intimate prose, he fearlessly shines a light on the dark side of success and challenges us all to take part in the deepening conversation around creativity, performance, and disorder.
