W.F. Strong Biography
Dr. W.F. Strong is a Fulbright Scholar and professor of communication at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where he has taught courses in communication, linguistics, culture, and history for more than 30 years. Strong holds degrees in communication and literature from Abilene Christian University and University of North Texas, as well as a doctorate in communication and rhetoric from University of Arizona. His storytelling influences include Mark Twain, the subject of his doctoral dissertation, and former public radio host Garrison Keillor.
Strong developed a series of brief radio vignettes titled "Stories From Texas," which explore Texas history, folklore, and culture. These segments highlight the Texas character, showcase passages from the state's literature, and provide narratives about Texas pride, entrepreneurial achievements, and regional mythology. Strong has served as the Texas commentator on the award-winning Texas Standard news program, broadcast on NPR stations across Texas. His "Stories from Texas" segments delve into the state's history and lore, from well-known legends to lesser-known stories and personal memories.
Strong is the author of two books: "Stories from Texas: Some of Them Are True" and "Stories from Texas: Some of Them Are True, Vol. II." The book adaptation of his radio stories reached the top position among Amazon's general Texas travel guides. He also narrated the audio version of "The Essential J. Frank Dobie" for Audible, introducing the work of the Texas storyteller to new audiences.
In addition to his books, Strong writes a monthly Texas history column for Texas Co-op Power Magazine, which has a regional readership of 3 million. He has maintained a lifelong interest in Texas literature, history, and culture, engaging with works such as Walter Prescott Webb's "Indians of Texas," Larry McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove" series, and Philipp Meyer's "The Son." Strong is a frequent speaker on Texas topics, known for his engaging narrative style and presence on public radio throughout the state.
