Eric Jager Biography
Eric Jager is a professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles, specializing in medieval literature and literary criticism. At UCLA, Jager teaches courses on Beowulf, Chaucer, the epic, and the romance, and leads a creative writing workshop in nonfiction. He joined UCLA from Columbia University, bringing expertise in Old and Middle English literature, classical culture, and literary theory.
Jager is the author of several books that combine historical research with literary nonfiction. His works include "The Tempter's Voice: Language and the Fall in Medieval Literature" and "The Book of the Heart," a study of heart imagery in medieval literature published by University of Chicago Press. His book "The Last Duel" became a New York Times Best Seller, was translated into multiple languages, and served as the basis for a BBC Radio Book of the Week, a BBC TV documentary, and a Ridley Scott film adaptation. Jager contributed as a script consultant for the film.
"The Last Duel" is the first in a trilogy of medieval true-crime stories, followed by "Blood Royal" and "Duke John's Skull." "Blood Royal" explores a conspiracy and assassination within the French royal family and the investigation that followed. These works have contributed to public understanding of medieval history and literature.
Jager's honors include an ACLS Fellowship, shortlisting for the Crime Writers' Association nonfiction Gold Dagger, and recognition on the ALA Notable Books List. He has received a research fellowship from the American Council of Learned Societies and the Weiss/Brown Award from The Newberry Library. His writing has appeared in academic journals, edited collections, and publications such as Los Angeles Times, The Times (London), Lapham's Quarterly, and The Daily Beast.
Jager has delivered invited talks at universities including Princeton, Duke, Chicago, Michigan, British Columbia, Caen, Orléans, and Lille, as well as at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Library in Paris. He has been interviewed by Time, Le Monde, El Mundo, and other media outlets, as well as on the true-crime podcast Most Notorious, The Jess Cagle Show, and The Medieval Podcast. Jager is recognized for presenting medieval history and literature in accessible narratives for both academic and general audiences.
