Christine Walker, MPPA Biography
Christine Walker, MPPA, is an autism advocacy expert, author, and educator whose career spans public policy, nonprofit leadership, and academia. Walker began her professional journey in politics and government after graduating from Lake Forest College with a degree in politics, working for elected and appointed officials in Illinois and Washington, D.C. She later earned a Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration from Northwestern University, specializing in legislative advocacy. Before becoming a parent of a child with autism, Walker worked as a sales executive within Tiffany & Co.'s business sales organization.
After navigating the complexities of raising a child with special needs, Walker returned to public policy as a legislative advocate for mental health and special education. Drawing from her personal experience, Walker authored "Chasing Hope: Your Compass for a New Normal, Navigating the World of the Special Needs Child," a resource for families and policymakers. Her work and advocacy have been featured on Fox and Friends, CLTV's "Your Money," WGN, New York Times, Parade, and Chicago Tribune. She is also the author of "The Smart Mom's Guide to Staying Home: 65 Simple Ways to Thrive, not Deprive, on One Income."
Walker founded the Chasing Hope Foundation to support families raising children with autism and related brain disorders. The foundation provides advocacy, consulting, and resources, including legislative advocacy, therapeutic residences, and guidance for navigating autism resources. Walker collaborates with school districts to ensure compliance with students' individualized education programs (IEPs) and has served as an expert witness before the Illinois legislature, testifying at a joint hearing of the Illinois House of Representatives and Senate on children's mental health care.
Walker returned to Lake Forest College as an adjunct professor of politics, teaching public policy, American government, legal studies, Congress, and disabilities in the classroom. She contributed to the development of the Public Policy Studies program at the college, including the annual Public Policy Analysis Challenge. Walker has also served as adjunct faculty at Adler University in the Masters of Public Policy and Administration program, focusing on urban mental health determinants.
Walker has participated in the invitation-only Rosalynn Carter Mental Health Symposium at the Carter Center in Atlanta and the One Mind for Research conference at UCLA, and is involved with the Illinois Mental Health Summit. She serves on the New Trier Township Committee on Disabilities, working to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities in her community. As a keynote speaker, Walker addresses topics such as neurodiversity, disability advocacy, government policy, resilience, and empowerment, drawing on her experience in autism advocacy, public policy, and education.
