T.J. Sharpe is a Stage IV melanoma survivor, patient advocate, keynote speaker, and cancer blogger whose experience navigating a metastatic melanoma diagnosis to remission has established him as a prominent voice in patient engagement and oncology. Shortly after the birth of his second child, Sharpe sought emergency care for a high fever and received a diagnosis of metastatic melanoma, with tumors affecting his lungs, liver, spleen, and small intestine. His initial oncologist recommended chemotherapy and projected a limited prognosis, which Sharpe chose to challenge.
Sharpe and his wife pursued additional medical opinions and ultimately participated in a clinical trial at Moffitt Cancer Center, testing a combination of immunotherapies, including Yervoy and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. As the first patient to receive this treatment, he chronicled his journey in his blog, "Patient 1." Although the first trial did not yield the desired results, Sharpe enrolled in a subsequent clinical trial involving a PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor, which led to a significant reduction in tumor size and long-term remission.
