Chaunté Lowe Biography
Chaunté Lowe is recognized as one of the most decorated female high jumpers in American track and field history. A professional athlete, American record holder, four-time Olympian, three-time World Championship medalist, and 12-time U.S. national champion, Lowe has built a legacy spanning two decades of competition at the highest level. She earned a bronze medal at the Olympic Games, a silver medal at the World Championships, and a gold medal at the World Indoor Championships. Lowe became the first American woman to win a world outdoor championships high jump medal since Louise Ritter.
Lowe began her athletic career at Georgia Tech, where she quickly distinguished herself in collegiate track and field. As a freshman, she finished second at the NCAA Championships and went on to win both the NCAA indoor and outdoor titles in her second year. At age 20, she became the first woman from Georgia Tech's track and field team to compete in the Olympics. Lowe graduated with a degree in economics and finance and later earned a master's degree in mathematics education, teaching trigonometry at Grayson High School in Atlanta after returning from the Olympic Games. She has been inducted into four halls of fame in recognition of her achievements and contributions to the sport.
Off the track, Lowe faced a diagnosis of triple-negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of the disease. She underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, missing national and world championships during her treatment. Despite these challenges, Lowe continued to train and advocate for breast cancer awareness, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Her efforts have been recognized with the NCAA Inspiration Award, the Hero Among Us award, and inclusion in Georgia Tech's 40 Under 40 Class. She is a TEDx speaker and author of the memoir "Boundless," which details her journey from childhood adversity to Olympic success.
