Steve Lydenberg Biography
Steve Lydenberg is recognized for his significant contributions to the field of responsible investing, with a career spanning more than four decades. Lydenberg began his work in responsible investment in 1975, researching the social and environmental records of companies with the Council on Economic Priorities. His research included in-depth studies on environmental practices in the steel industry and diversity in banking. He spent 12 years at the Council, ultimately serving as director of corporate accountability research.
In the late 1980s, Lydenberg joined Joan Bavaria's SRI asset management firm, now known as Trillium Asset Management, one of the first firms in the United States dedicated exclusively to socially responsible investing. In 1990, he co-founded KLD Research & Analytics, the first company to provide environmental, social, and governance (ESG) analysis of S&P 500 Index companies for institutional investors. At KLD, Lydenberg co-created the first socially responsible investing index of U.S. companies, now known as the MSCI KLD 400 Social Index, and served as research director for more than a decade. His work at KLD contributed to the foundation of the global ESG movement. Lydenberg is also co-author of several books on corporate social responsibility, including "Rating America's Corporate Conscience," "The Social Investment Almanac," and "Investing for Good."
Lydenberg is the founding director of the Initiative for Responsible Investment at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, established to advance research and institutional support for responsible investment. He has also served as partner, strategic vision at Domini Impact Investments, guiding the firm's policies and practices. His published articles on responsible investment include "Reason, Rationality and Fiduciary Duty" in Journal of Business Ethics and "On Materiality and Sustainability: The Value of Disclosure in the Capital Markets." His books "Corporations and the Public Interest" and "Dilemmas in Responsible Investment," co-authored with Céline Louche, have contributed to the development of ESG investing and sustainable finance.
Lydenberg and William Burckart introduced the concept of system-level investing, which extends beyond traditional ESG analysis to consider the broader social, financial, and environmental systems affected by investment decisions. Their book, "21st Century Investing: Redirecting Financial Strategies to Drive Systems Change," explores how system-level investors can support the stability and health of these systems for long-term financial returns. The book received the Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award. Lydenberg was also named the inaugural recipient of TIIP's System-Level Investing Visionary Award.
Lydenberg's work has contributed to the evolution of responsible investing from a focus on individual portfolios to a movement aimed at reshaping economic systems. He serves as a senior fellow at SIRI, the Sustainable Investment Research Initiative at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. Lydenberg holds a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College, a Master of Fine Arts in theater from Cornell University, and a Chartered Financial Analyst designation.
