Regan Smith Biography
Regan Smith is an American swimmer recognized for her achievements in backstroke and butterfly events. Smith gained international attention at the World Aquatics Championships in Gwangju, where she won gold in the 200-meter backstroke, setting a world record, and contributed to a world-record performance in the 4×100-meter medley relay. Her performances earned her the Golden Goggle Award for Breakout Performer of the Year and the title of World Swimmer of the Year (female) by Swimming World.
Smith holds the world record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.13 seconds and also maintains short course world records in the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter backstroke. During her Olympic debut at the Tokyo Games, Smith earned a silver medal in the 200-meter butterfly, a bronze in the 100-meter backstroke, and a silver as part of Team USA's 4×100-meter medley relay team. At the World Championships in Budapest, she secured gold medals in the 100-meter backstroke and as part of the 4×100-meter medley relay team.
Smith has faced challenges throughout her career, including a difficult experience at the U.S. Olympic trials, which led to a change in her approach to competition. Training under coach Bob Bowman, Smith made the decision to turn professional and relocate her training, which contributed to her continued success.
At the Paris Olympic Games, Smith won three silver medals in the 200-meter butterfly, 100-meter backstroke, and 200-meter backstroke finals. She also earned a gold medal with the United States women's 4×100-meter medley relay, swimming the opening backstroke leg. With eight career Olympic medals, Smith holds the distinction of being the most decorated Minnesotan Summer Olympian.
