Gabby Thomas Biography
Gabrielle Thomas is an accomplished American track-and-field athlete, not only known for her remarkable sprinting abilities in both the 100 and 200 meters but also for her academic achievements. She is recognized as the third-fastest woman of all time in the 200 meters, with her record of 21.61 seconds established at the 2020 US Olympic trials. Her notable performances at the Olympics include winning the bronze medal at the 200-meter event of the 2020 Summer Olympics and securing gold and silver medals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 200 m, 4 × 100 m relay, and 4 × 400 m relay events, respectively.
Thomas's prowess extends beyond the Olympics as she has succeeded in various international competitions, including the World Championships and World Relays. On August 25, 2023, she claimed the 200m silver medal in the 2023 World Athletics Championships with a time of 21.81 seconds. Moreover, she clinched gold as part of Team USA in the women's 4x100m relay final at the same championship, setting a record time of 41.03 seconds. She's also known for her performance at the Diamond League, where she won the 200 m race in Lausanne in both 2018 and 2019.
Apart from her impressive athletic career, Thomas has also excelled academically. She obtained her undergraduate degree in Neurobiology and Global Health & Health Policy at Harvard University, graduating in 2019. During her time at Harvard, she set records in the Ivy League for the 100 meters, 200 meters, and indoor 60 meters. She moved to Austin, Texas, where she is currently earning her Master's degree in Epidemiology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, with the aim to pursue a career in epidemiology following her track career. She turned professional in October 2018, under the sponsorship of New Balance, demonstrating her ability to balance both her professional and academic pursuits successfully.
Despite facing health challenges such as overcoming a benign tumor on her liver in 2021, Thomas has continued to compete at a high level, setting personal best times of 11.00 seconds in the 100 m, 21.60 seconds in the 200 m, 49.68 seconds in the 400 m, and 6.27 meters in the long jump. Her resilience and dedication have cemented her status as one of the world's prominent athletes.
