Dara Torres Biography
Five-time Olympian and 12-time medalist Dara Torres is the Head Swimming and Diving Coach at Boston College, a role she assumed for the 2024–2025 season. She balances coaching with motivational speaking, promoting water safety, media appearances, and philanthropic work. Torres began her career by setting her first world record at age 15, marking the start of five Olympic appearances from 1984 to 2008. She became the first U.S. swimmer to compete in five Games and the oldest swimmer to make the Olympic team at age 41.
Torres won 12 Olympic medals—four gold, four silver and four bronze—placing her among the most decorated women in Olympic swimming history. Her 26-year Olympic career, spanning from age 15 to 41, remains unmatched among American athletes. She was inducted into the United States Olympic Committee Hall of Fame in 2019.
Beyond competition, Torres has modeled, including for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 1994, and worked in television as a reporter, announcer and host of "The Clubhouse" on the Resort Sports Network. She has served as a spokesperson for brands including Speedo, Toyota and CaniBrands, joining the latter as Chief Wellness and Lifestyle Officer in 2019, and appeared regularly on CBS Sports’ "We Need to Talk."
Torres is also active in philanthropy, serving as Vice President of the American chapter of the Princess Charlene of Monaco Foundation, which focuses on drowning prevention, and as a celebrity swimmer for Swim Across America, supporting cancer research. She is the author of two books: "Age is Just a Number: Achieve Your Dreams at Any Stage in Your Life" and "Gold Medal Fitness: A Revolutionary 5-Week Program."
